Comparison of educational terms in India and U.S.A
If you are someone who dreams big and who has a vision to receive the best quality education, which would shape your career in the finest possible way you may be thinking about taking your further studies abroad. But some times the educational terms used in different countries may be confusing to you , at first glance. For example, students from India may find it confusing as they plan to study graduation and post graduation in the US. So let us find out what causes the confusion.
Undergraduate Studies (leading to a Bachelors degree) – It can be started after plus 2 (i.e.10+2 / 12th). There are lot of scholarships available for undergraduate students and these scholarships are mostly based on your SAT I scores.
Graduate Studies (leading to a Masters degree) – Students with 16 years of education can apply for a Masters degree in USA. A student with B.A., B.Sc. or B.com is advised to do one year of M.A., M.Sc., or M.com to fulfill the 16 years of education requirement. Though there are very few universities, which do accept you with your 15 years education for limited programs. You need to check individual college website or consult your counselor for more details.
There are more than 3500 accredited universities in US. There are lots of specializations (majors) to choose from the traditional subject areas like engineering, business management, computers, etc; to courses in public health, biotechnology, bioinformatics, advertising, design, graphics and animation. Any attempt to make choice without proper guidance can be time consuming, expensive and may cost you your admission. Remember the application is “You” in the eyes of the admissions officer. Hence, it is always better to take a counsellor advice during admission procedures. Counsellor are expert in one’s field and will give you advice which will not only help you to get into good universities but also save few thousand dollars through financial aid, scholarship or assistantship.
The admission procedures to universities abroad take 10 to 12 months. Remember your 1st standard lesson that “The early bird catches the worm”. This is true, even when you are applying for studies abroad. So, start early enough for your application and plan in advance to avoid rushing and pushing.
